Writing a Christmas Carol

Have you ever composed a poem or song that represents how you feel about Christmas? Perhaps you just think about what you would like to hear in a Christmas carol because it embodies all the treasured memories you keep of the season. If you don’t have any formal musical training it may be more complicated than you realise. But, giving a voice to your innermost thoughts about the wonder of Christmas may inspire you to try.

Jingle Bells is one Christmas carol that shows us that we should never give up on our dreams. The man that is credited with composing the song had many struggles in his personal and professional life. A lesser individual may have just given up. Thank goodness he didn’t, or we may never have had the pleasure of Jingle Bells. His delightful song with the words that evoke childlike joy in the season and in us could have been unknown without his persistence. The name of the man is all but forgotten, but the fact that he failed in life as a businessman, father, husband and scientist lives on. We are ever grateful that we can go on that sleigh ride in our minds whenever we hear those familiar strains.

With this gentleman as your inspiration, take pen and paper and write what is in your heart about this miraculous season. Let your memories from your most important Christmas’ nurture the composer within. Enjoy the process, and your Christmas carol will be a favourite of all that hear it.
