Words of Christmas Carols

Christmas carols may seem traditional, humorous, or meaningful today, but the first Christmas carols were created on religious overtones. The words were meant to imply religious rites, customs, or even refer to certain religious sects. Surprisingly the first Christmas carols were performed by French people. During this time Christianity was not allowed in many of the countries, especially their holidays. The words and tunes performed by the French still used the Christian faith, but there were also Pagan rites throughout the songs.

A mix of both faiths brought the traditional idea of what a Christmas carol must contain. Since the groups could not remain in one place for too long they would move around finding pockets of safety among friends and family. The groups were called carollers, thus carolling was formed. The idea came from an ancient custom of singing about adventures and during religious ceremonies.

Today Christmas carols take on a different form. The melodies used often take from the older songs and words to form something unique. The tempo may change or the entire thought of what a carol is may change. However, the writers are still looking for something that brings hope, joy and peace to the songs through their words and melodies. Many artists use their experiences to form the Christmas carols. Religious words or rites are not as important to the songs being created for some artists. There are still many artists who would rather stay within the traditional to tell a story of the Christian saga. Several of the Christmas carols of the past have been remade with a different take by modern artists. The songs take a mixture of emotions to create something totally new, as well as a carol that the new generation will enjoy. Some may feel that the words have not changed, but the meanings derived from them have.

Gift ideas can be difficult to come by when Christmas comes, but one thing is for certain. CD’s or ITune downloads make a great gift for children. Passing on traditions is often extremely important to us. Through the musical compositions of the past or today we are able to find melodies which offer the true meaning of Christmas in a carol.
